A major disciple of Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson RiverSchool of Painting, Asher B. Durand believed that nature in the “New World” was imbued with sacred meaning. By contemplating nature, he believed, one could join with the sacred and achieve enlightenment as well. He translated these believes into landscape paintings, especially of the CatskillHighPeaks. Before long, Durand, Cole and others helped forge a national image of an American landscape filled with awe-inspiring scenes.
