In the summer of 1890, Mark Twain, plagued by rheumatism and unable to write because of it, decided to vacation with his wife and family at Onteora Park in the Catskill High Peaks. There, comfortably ensconced in a quaint summer cottage named “The Balsam,” Twain could bask in the warmth of his many friends, including interior decorator Candace Wheeler, writers Lawrence Hutton, Brander Matthews and artist Carroll Beckworth as they gathered in the parlor of “The Bear & Fox Inn” to gossip and swap stories. It is while at the “Bear & Fox” that Twain is credited with having quipped about the Inn’s paper thin walls that they were so thin “you could hear a woman changing her mind in the next room.” The same cannot be said for the rooms at the Washington Irving Inn!
