It is ironic that nineteenth century English artist Thomas Cole, born 1801 in Lancashire, England, would one day establish America’s first school of art. In 1825, Cole, now living in New York City with his family, spent his summers hiking and sketching the Catskill High Peaks, especially the area that is now North/South Lake Campgrounds in the Town of Hunter and a part of the Catskill State Park. During one of these trips, Cole sketched three paintings that he would later complete in his studio, “The Falls of Kaaterskill” and “Lake With Dead Trees” among them. The paintings came to the attention of fellow artist John Trumbull, who bought one of them for $25, and told his friends Asher Durand and William Dunlap about the remaining two. Thus was the Hudson RiverSchool of Landscape Painting born.
