For many years, Maude Adams, that most reclusive of superstars and America’s first Peter Pan, lived quietly in a home built just for her (with very low ceilings, so we’ve been told, to accommodate her petite frame and make her feel more comfortable in her surroundings) in the private community of Onteora Park in the High Peaks’ Town of Hunter, NY. When J. M. Barrie’s play first opened on Nov. 6, 1905 at the Empire Theater starring Ms. Adams as Peter Pan, her friend and Onteora neighbor, Mark Twain wrote to her: “It is my belief that Peter Pan is a great and refining and uplifting benefaction to this sordid and money-mad age; and that the next best play on the boards is a long way behind it as long as you play Peter.” Twain was right, and Adams would play Peter for a total of more than 1,500 performances before she was through. Ms. Adams was later described by her friend and companion, Louise Boynton as “…a woman beautiful in life and thought, with the soul of an artist, and the heart of a child…”
