Between Queen Victoria’s accession to the British throne in 1837 and her Diamond Jubilee in 1897, British and American society saw a rise in the revival of craftsmanship in the production of such items as murals, wood-carvings, stained-glass windows, embroideries, metalwork and furniture under the direction of William Morris, founder of the Craft Movement of 1861. Morris sparked many artists to take craft seriously. Among these was Candace Wheeler, maven of OnteoraPark, and founder of the Society of Decorative Art, which supported excellence of design in American embroidery.
